Data retention in Germany!

Many demonstrations at universities and in German cities couldn’t avoid it.

The German parliament voted at November 9th 2007 for storing telecommunications data for a period of six month.

This includes:

  • telefone calls
  • internet dial-in
  • email communication
  • fax and sms data

and beginns with the 1.1.2008.

Anonymising services like TOR (or proxies) will be prohibited.

This decision was mainly made for prosecution and to combat terrorism.

In Germany there is a controversial discussion because all the data from every user is stored without previous suspicion. With this set of data the whole electronic communication behavior of citizens can be analyzed statistically, including the possibility to trace movements of people.
