Extended data storage in Germany

The government decided to extend the central storage of personal data from German citizens. The earning of citizens who apply for social benefits shall be stored in order to expose electronically income statements. The platform ELENA shall provide central data access without the knowledge of those concerned.

Especially after the recent data glitch where personal data about citizens was accessible over the internet – this central storage of data is discussed controversial. The reason for that mishap was that administrators didn’t change the default password after installing the used software.

Meanwhile, it became known that the Austrian Police intensely uses their new right to monitor citizens. In the last 4 months they determined 3863 times the identity of internet users. This corresponds to a query every 45 minutes.

For Germany it is not known how often the information stored for the data retention is accessed.
